Writer/Director Mike Nirenberg, of the award-winning short film Diagnosis Trauma, and author of the screenplays Zygote, Woof!, 5:34 and others, has taken a unique path to becoming a filmmaker--through medical school. Nirenberg, a Toronto native now living in the Chicago area, trained as a physician and surgeon and continues to practice medicine while writing screenplays and making movies. His stories have a unique and realistic perspective and he succeeds in bringing his unique viewpoint to his films. He is a clinical residency instructor, has lectured to his medical association and published journal articles on surgery and forensic medicine. Diagnosis Trauma has received positive recognition at a variety of regional film festivals. It won Silver at the 36th Annual WorldFest in Houston, 2nd Place at the 2003 First Glance Film Festival in Philadelphia, and received the Best Comedy Award and the Audience Award at the 2003 IFP Flyover Film Festival in Chicago. Nirenberg's feature screenplay Zygote was named a Semi-Finalist in the Texas Film Institute’s script contest. It also placed in the Top 30 in the American Accolades screenplay contest, placed in the Top 10 Percent with the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship, and the Top 10 Percent of the 750 screenplays reviewed by the Tribeca/Sloan Film Program, a competition from Robert DeNiro's Tribeca Film Institute. |
